Reproductive Justice Organizations

Sister Song:

Sister Song is an organization that was created in 1997 to represent reproductive justice in our political system. It became an organization that also represented women of color who were being heavily discriminated when it came to representation as feminists. They have 4 main goals as a group including a goal of providing “a platform for our movement to work together collaboratively on shared policy and advocacy goals for the advancement of RJ.” Sister Song works to allow those affected or not, to speak and let their voices be heard for those who have not listened. Currently, the executive director is an African American woman named Monica Simpson. She is a member of the LBGTQ+ community and has worked to transform all areas of social justice.

The Committee to End Sterilization Abuse:

A committee founded in 1970s focused on sharing the stories and spreading awareness about the forced sterilization of women, specifically women of color. This group has been fighting to pass legislation against sterilization abuse and forced sterilization since the 10970s. At first they did not have a huge following and were met with a lot of opposition but as time has gone on they have gained a bigger and stronger following. The to this day are advocates for Reproductive Justice and Reproductive Health laws.

Advocates For Youth:

An organization founded in 1980 with the goal of spreading awareness of reproductive health and reproductive justice to people of all ages. This group aims to make sexual education in schools better and for it to be more inclusive. They also are supporters of Reproductive health laws and trying to end the homophobic and transphobic attitude of the commonly taught Reproductive health classes. They were the creators of the 1 in 3 campaign which is a campaign to tell stories about abortion and spread awareness as to what abortion really is and how it affects people.

Reproductive Health Access Project:

This organization's main goal is to make sure that people are able to get access to birth control and abortions when they need it. They are trying to make reproductive health issues part of routine health checkups.

Planned Parenthood:

Planned Parenthood was created in 1916 in order to provide women with information that allowed them to take care of their bodies. Margret Sanger, the founder, believed women should be able to make choices about their own bodies so she created PP to give women resources that they needed to care for themselves. There are over 600 Planned Parenthood clinics in the United States that mainly provide affordable, preventive care and expert physicians in sexual health. They also do not limit their services to women and invite all people to become informed about their sexual health. The Planned Parenthood Fund, a non-profit organization branched from the federation, was created so that Planned Parenthood would have a platform for advocacy. There have been many campaigns created for reproductive justice through the organization as well as protests that have spurred the movement.
