Significant Figures

The following women are some of the founding figures of Reproductive Justice...



Loretta Ross: She is an African American who advocates for Reproductive Justice. She was the co-founder and national coordinator of the sistersong Women of Color Reproductive Justice collective from 2005-2012.  


Betty Friedan: In 1966 she co-founded the National Organization for Women. In 1969 she fought for abortion rights by establishing the National Association for the repeal of Abortion Laws.




Margaret Sanger: Worked as a nurse and spread information on reproductive health whenever she worked. In 1915 she was indicated for sending diaphragms through the mail and then arrested a year later for opening the country’s first official birth  control clinic.




Katharine McCormick: Was a member of the National American Woman Suffrage who moved to the west coast to oversee the development of birth control pills.




Mary Calderone: Became the medical director of Planned Parenthood in 1953. She promoted sex education national wide  by convincing the American Medical Association by telling their parents about family planning and birth control.
